“Water and ice, Stanley,” Yevgenia said, “what did you do to him?”

“I only banged him up a little bit,” Stan said. “Gimme your smelling salts.”

They were in the lobby of Stan’s mountain, kneeling on either side of the unconscious Ronnie, whom they’d propped up against the marble wall behind his desk. Yevgenia adjusted her armor, pulled a vial off her equipment belt, and handed it to Stan. He popped the cork and held the tiny bottle under Ronnie’s nose.

“Wha—!” Ronnie yelped. He looked from Stan to Yevgenia and back again. “Oh no.”

“Heya, Ronnie,” Stan said. “You remember Evie?”

“Of c-course,” Ronnie said. “Good to see you again, Miss Yevgenia.”

“I wish I could say the same, Ronnie.” Yevgenia held up the silver dove coin. “Who gave you this?”

Ronnie shook his head. “I can’t say.”

Stan put a hand around Ronnie’s throat. “You know Evie’s a Tartar, right, Ronnie? She’s authorized to use lethal force at her digression.”

“Discretion,” Evie said.

“Yeah, that too,” Stan said. “Evie can take down an angel if she needs to, Ronnie. But she don’t need you to be in one piece to question you. We can just remove your head, bring that back to one’a her dungeons, and continue this conversation there.”

“Please, Mister Stanley,” Ronnie rasped. “I would tell you if I could. They—they did this to me, when they gave me that coin. It wasn’t a payoff. It was cursed. I can’t say.”

Stan relaxed his grip and looked at Yevgenia. “You buyin’ this?”

Yevgenia studied the coin. “It’s possible. An angel could have done something to the silver that I can’t detect.”

Stan turned back to Ronnie. “Okay, so you can’t say exactly who it was. Was it an angel? Yes or no.”

Ronnie struggled briefly. “I c-can’t. I’m so sorry, Mister Stanley.”

“Wait.” Yevgenia leaned forward. “You said ‘they.’ Was there more than one?”

Ronnie’s eyes widened, and he nodded.

“How many?” Yevgenia asked.

Ronnie gurgled, then held up one hand, fingers splayed.

“Five?” Yevgenia said. “There were five of them?”

Ronnie nodded again, dropped his hand, and gasped for breath.

“Okay, just rest there for a minute.” Yevgenia patted Ronnie’s shoulder and gestured to Stan. She stood up and walked around the desk. Stan followed her.

“This is bad,” she said, tapping two fingers on her sword hilt.

“Yeah, I thought you said only one angel was missing,” Stan said. “Maybe you guys missed the other four?”

Yevgenia gave him a peeved look. “Anyone in Tartarus so much as flutters a wing, and alarm bells go off. We knew about the missing bird immediately. The cage is in full lockdown. All the other Fallen have been accounted for.”

“Then your escapee is workin’ with people on the outside,” Stan said.

“Yeah,” Yevgenia said. “That’s bad.”

“So tell me about this missing—”

The lobby doors burst inward in a shower of wood splinters and stone shards. Yevgenia threw her arms around Stan and hurled him to the ground, landing on top of him. Stan might have enjoyed it, except for all the heavy armor and the fact that a horde of armed Draconis, led by Miika, stormed into the lobby and surrounded them.
